Most, if not all, nonprofits rely on volunteers to achieve their missions. Consider the Girls Scouts of Northern California (GSNorCal), which depends on 30,000 volunteers to lead troops and support a wide range of other goals. Keeping these volunteers each year is critical for GSNorCal ongoing success. Which is why the organization partnered with TCC Group to determine what are the predictors for volunteer retention.
GSNorCal has just 150 staff members to provide services to over 50,000 girls in 19 countries. GSNorCal’s volunteers are critical, with troop leaders serving an average of 30 hours per month while other volunteers donate an average 8 hours a month. This translates to huge figures: $59.4 million for leaders and $43.56 million for volunteers per year.
Working with TCC Group, GSNorCal conducted an online survey of 1,371 current and past volunteers to determine what makes volunteers come back year after year. Key findings include:

The nonprofit sector often focuses on innovation in the context of new organizations and entrepreneurship. But this focus is skewed.
