Don’t Be Afraid of Changing Your AMS

Tons of time and effort went into developing your current association management software. And even if you hate it, you’d probably think long and hard before changing your AMS.

All of that energy doesn’t even include the calls you took and research you did before committing to your current system. But if it isn’t working, it isn’t working.

And we haven’t even mentioned the fact that changing your AMS last time around was probably pricier than staying on your legacy system.

Now that we’ve thoroughly reaffirmed your fear of changing your AMS, now it’s time to tell you why it isn’t so scary a process after all.

4 Reasons Changing Your AMS Isn’t As Scary As it Seems

No. 1: Plenty of Options

You’re treading water because your association doesn’t think the perfect AMS is out there. Nothing you’ve had so far has been the perfect fit.

But have you taken a look at your options? There are a lot.

At the most recent ASAE Annual Meeting and Expo, there were a ton of vendors — and that doesn’t even include the ones who decided to skip the event altogether.

That perfect fit is out there. You just have to find it.

No. 2: There’s No Law Against Taking Your Time

Stuck with an AMS vendor for the long haul? Plenty of associations have been there, too. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do a little window shopping.

In fact, the earlier you start looking, the better.

A couple of years left on your current system? Here’s what we recommend:

  1. Go to AMS Fest
  2. Pick up the phone when a vendor calls
  3. Decide if you want a platform-based AMS
  4. Separate the wheat from the chaff
  5. Do a lot of research on your top options

No. 3: Better Off Happy Than Frustrated

If your association is too worried about the expense of a move from system-to-system, remember that you can’t put a price tag on happiness.

If staff is struggling to figure out your current system, they’ll be eager to try something new. Plus, a difficult AMS can tank your ROI.

Finding something easy-to-use is your best bet. It beats sticking with what you’ve got.

No. 4: Vendor Resources are Aplenty

Nowadays, there’s no excuse for an association management system that’s difficult to adopt.

Not only should it be easy-to-use, it should come with enough learning resources to make user adoption simple.

Whether it’s guided learning, video tutorials, eBooks, white papers or plain old customer service, your vendor should offer it all. If they don’t do they really have their clients in mind after they sign on the dotted line?

Changing Your AMS Has Never Been Easier

Changing your AMS isn’t a race. It’s a careful, drawn-out process which should end in a perfect result.

The thing is, it so often doesn’t.
